"Many employers are becoming more and more selective in the screening for their candidates," said Jonathan Scales, HR consultant with Adviant, Inc. in Joplin, MO. "One thing we've seen is some employers are looking at unemployment as a screening tool." Workers need to keep that gap between jobs filled with relevant activities, Scales said. He advises additional schooling, volunteering and, of course, networking. "Show you're not, as some I've heard say, sitting at home playing Xbox," he said.
